Question About Up-Conversion DVD Player...

I bought a new HD-TV a week ago, and the sales clerk told me about Up conversion dvd players.

I know Blue Ray and HD DVD are out, but between certain studios only supporting a certain format, and the high cost of the players and dvd's themselves, I figured up conversion would be the way to go.

Questions though...

1) Is there a certain up conversion dvd player that is recommended by some here? What is a quality one but one thats not terribly expensive?

2) Is the picture quality THAT much better than regular DVD? I haven't seen an up conversion on display at a store...but is it truly a noticeable difference in quality, or do you have to be a HD connoseuir to notice?

3) Will the up conversion player make every single dvd improve in quality? Or is it only certain movies? If it is, what is that based on? Will it improve the quality on TV shows on dvd?

Thanks!

I recently purchased an Onkyo SP404 for $129.99 to compliment my new 32" Westy LCD HDTV. I think my years of a 480i player via component on a tube CRT has skewed my vision because I'm constantly trying to adjust settings that will give me a decent picture. I believe it largely depends on the transfer on the DVD: a bad transfer will only result in a bad upconvert. However I've played around with Disney DVDs like Finding Nemo that have a pure digital transfer and the upconversion appears rather nicely.

Another model I hear is recommended is the OPPO OPDV971H.

Just remember it's not true HD so don't go in expecting a pure HD picture. It's a decent alternative in the meantime while the format war wages on and until that equipment starts to come down in price.

I like my Oppo 971 but I believe the upconversion difference is reliant on the quality of the transfer to begin with. I do not believe it would help tv shos dvd's.
