Hey, good news! One of the neighborhood handy man found my DVD player! He was helping someone cover their exterior water faucets and noticed two boxes with our address. My wife had ordered something as well.

Interestingly the actual DVD box looks like it has been resealed. I'll try it out tomorrow and make sure all is working...

I plugged in my D1 just to see if it worked and to check out my 27" LCD that I finally got hung. I used the 25' HDMI cord I got and didn't get a pic. The tv said "no signal". I ran a S-video I had laying around it it worked fine. I tried switching sources on the TV, but that didn't work. Do I need to set up the D1 for HDMI?

I'm curious to hear reports on the Bravo myself. I hated the reliability problems that plague it, but it's way cheaper than the other alternative (Oppo 970).

I have a joytech video switcher that is causing ghosting at any rez over 480p. I'm using one of my component video inputs for my DVD player and the other for the joytech.

My HD72 has Faroudja deinterlacing so I want to test running digital 480i to the projector and maybe liquidating my old Zenith DVB-318 upscaling DVD player. That would free up a component video input for my HD satellite DVR.

So far I've held off because the Oppo 970 + 40-50ft cable is pretty pricey. Plus it'd be yet another cable running to the projector.

You have to set it to the type of output you want. It doesn't output DVI with anything else at the same time. So if you have s-video working you can set it for DVI and then you'll lose the picture until you connect the DVI->HDMI.

You should flash the firmware with the composite connection first though.

OK, I've got Nero Express, so I burned it to CD with that and will see if it works. I do have composit running to my X1 so should be able to work with that.

I finally got around to trying to flash the firmware and just can't get it to do it. X forwarded me the instructions from cavu, but it doesn't appear to load the boot cd as described.

I was able to use Nero to successfully burn the CD. It has a whole set of files on there. When I open the tray, put the CD in, turn off the player, then while holding the stop button, turn the player on again, it will in fact display "bootcd" on the display. However, once I let it go, it will end up saying "No CD" for a little bit, and then show "Loading". After a while, the display says "ISO CD" and the screen shows the Media Library screen saying there are no media files found.

Can anyone who has done this tell me what I'm doing wrong?

BTW, I had ordered the D1 from newegg, and yeah, it definitely has been opened before and taped up with some yellowing tape. The player still looks new, so not really sure who had opened it before.

hmmm... maybe it's because the unit I got already has the latest firmware? I tried the sequences to get into the customizable resolution and to make it region free. Both worked.

Anyone know if there is a way to get the player to display the firmware version?

Well believe it or not, I just got around to doing the mod on the D1. No, I haven't even been using the unit. I did get a PS3 over X-mas so the D1 sort of took a back seat. However,

My regular dvdp player/tivo appears to be going out. I keep getting loading errors on the dvd player. So I figure I better get the D1 up and running.

Went pretty smooth. I think I used a little to much solder, but oh well. Nothing silly. There was a lot of glue on the capacitor, but that was about it. It powered up fine, but likely will be tomorrow before I try it out.

You still liking your X?????

Yes, I still like it although I've only used it a couple of times in the last 3 months. I'm so used to using my HTPC and I really do like the HTPC's picture quality so I don't tend to use anything else with the projector.

I must have at least a dozen standalone DVD players around and the only one that gets any regular use is the Philips 642 in the bedroom hooked up to a 27" TV. Maybe I should move the D1 into the bedroom to give it some use, but it's kind of wasted on a regular TV. Actually, its component output isn't supposed to be that good anyway.

Interesting. I'd like to consider a HTPC, but with the wife and kids, don't think there is a way. They only got comfortable using the media room on their own when I got and programed a Harmony 880 remote.

Yea, I read that about the D1 as well. Go HDMI (DVI) or you might as well just get a different player. Of course I'm going to have to get a HDMI switcher now since both the D1 and PS3 use HDMI and my pj only had one HDMI input.

WOW! I'm impressed! I slipped out the PS3 and put the D1 in its place. Very impressive. On Disney/Pixar I start to get an almost 3-D look with lots of depth. The color is dead on and didn't see it wash anything out. In fact, overall it appears brighter. I'll need to check my pj settings, but I swear it is brighter then my other DVDp player but that was thru component so I may not have it set up the same.

What really impressed me with with darker movies. LOR and SW really opened up with the D1/HD70 combination. Still dark movies, but lots more detail and depth.

I know I should just play, but what do you think for setting? On HDMI looks like I can set to 720p or 1080i. I have it on 720p since that is what my pj is. Any other set up suggestions?

edit: OMG! I sat and really watched some of my favorite clips. I just got done watching the end of Pirates, Dead Man's Chest. Holy Shit! The detail is incredible. You know I thought SD on my PS3 was pretty good, but that just shows how bad my DVDp player is! The the wrinkles, the hair, the dirt, the detail in the wood steps at the very end....WOW! I'm sold! Heck, I wonder if I can find another one for a back up!!!

I did have one nervous minute: when I popped in Dead Man's Chest, it pixelated real bad and froze up. Luckily I remembered reading over at AVS that if this happens power down and back up and should be fine. True enough it was.

edit/edit: last night I re-wired pretty much all my electrics to get the D1 in place. I think did some comparison with it v. my PS3 on SD. The Bravo is significantly better. Much more deal, especially in dark area. Also a more 3-D look to the image. In addistion, the PS3 seems to crush some bright scenes, where the D1 still retains all the detail and depth. After watching the D1 for a while the PS3 almost seems to have a hazy look about it. Now this was SD. Once I get everything included my Harmony remote working, I might compared to Blu-ray.

I'm now using a custom setting for output based on the calculator over a AVS. Man this a sharp player. Incredible detail. And since that one freeze up, I have not had a problem. I was thinking about ordering a new OEM loader, but not sure now.

Also using a DVI to HDMI adapter then HDMI cord to a Monoprice switcher works fine.
