power supply question

For your A/V setups, do you use a standard surge protector or something more like this http://www.wildwestelectronics.net/moncabhomthe3.html ?

I'm trying to decide if these power centers are worthwhile.

Only the AVS2000 is truly any different, and it isn't shown on your link. The more expensive models may have slightly better surge clamping than lesser stuff, but lightning could still get through. Not much else will get through a decent Panamax or basic Monster Cable model, anyway. So there isn't much benefit to the high priced stuff. I like the Monster HTS2000 and its 12 outlets. Nothing else has 12.

I think the prices at that site are actually higher than most, and higher than MSRP. You'd find better prices almost anywhere. The HTS2000 ought to be $200 or less, the AVS2000 ought to be $1500 or less. IIRC.

Even a basic no-name model from Target for $20 can be quite good. More than enough for most people. With Panamax or Monster you are paying more for a good warranty. If nothing else, both companies readily replace their strips with new ones if they are damaged by surges. I'm running an HTS2000MKII that came free under warranty, I had originally purchased an HTS2000. (no MKII)

Thanks for the info. I'll do some price shopping for an HTS2000. It sounds like it would be a significant upgrade over the cheapie I'm using now. Lightning is common here, so a better warranty would be nice.

I use Panamax products in my theater, I have one panamax unit that is 12 years old and has never failed me during any power surges.
