I played my first R2 disc on the Oppo last night (remastered Hong Kong Legends version of The Killer). Once I entered the right code to make the player R0, it worked perfectly. It is going to be so nice to finally have a region free player.

Is there a hack to make it upconvert through the component outputs?

That's why I decided to go w/ the 970 for my 30" Sanyo. I was tempted to shell out the extra $50 or so for the 971, but I won't be able to discern any differences between the two. I'm still getting a better DVD player than I could at a B&M for the same price. I just placed the order since my 7 1/2 year old Sony is getting worse by the week. It won't play Iron Giant anymore and it's driving my daughter crazy.

I went for the 981 from Amazon. It was not in stock, but I hope it ships sooner than later.

Why didn't you order directly from Oppo?

You're better off ordering directly from Oppo. It has been out of stock at Amazon for months (at least since January). You'll pay for shipping at Oppo, but you'll have the player in about three days.

Anyone know where I can get remote codes for this player?

I don't want to shell out for a Harmony remote yet, and would like to use my Onkyo receiver to control the DVD player's basic functions.

I did it because I have the Amazon credit card, so I get double points toward a gift certificate. Also, free shipping, but since Salty mentioned it's been OOS for months I cancelled. Then I saw Oppo is actually a marketplace seller on Amazon, so I ordered from them via Amazon, which still gets me the points and about the same shipping cost as from Oppo's site. According to FedEx it is scheduled for delivery today!

I know the 970 has a new beta firmware for alternate remote codes. YOu could try emailing them and see if this exists for the 971 as well.

I actually have the 970 as I was aware of the macroblocking issues with DLP. I will try emailing them.

Thanks,

The firmware for the 970 is right on the support page (beta version)
http://www.oppodigital.com/dv970hd/dv970hd_support.html

It also has a noise reduction feature as well.

I believe there is a hack someplace.

THe 970HD one can be found here:
http://www.lament.us/oppo/

EDIT: Found this on another site regarding upscaling over component:

The 981 has no component output, so that would be a good trick.

The 971 component is limited to 480i (576i PAL) by hardware.

http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks?dv...po+971&hits=50

It uses the same hack used for the 971. I've tried it on the 981 and it worked.

OK, never mind. It's pretty easy to find out in the www. If anyone is wondering this worked for me:

1. Press Setup on remote control to access the setup page
2. Enter 9210 on the remote
3. A service menu will pop up
4. Select a region: 0 - 6 in region code. 0 is all-region.
5. Press Setup on remote again to exit.

It should play all region and PAL discs.

btw, thanks anyway, mrhan!

Speaking of which, are PAL discs downconverted to NTSC resolution by an Oppo, or is the complete PAL resolution used during playback?

Question... if I've got a Sony 1080i Grand Wega I should go with the 970HD and not the 981, right? I assume since the highest res for the 970 is 1080i that would be my best bet. I don't have 1080p so the 981 would be pretty pointless, no? I just want to be sure since the difference is about $100 clams.
