What was the first problem on your first dvd player?
 

My Toshiba player refused to play the running commentary track for the first Austin Powers movie.

In my Apex, dvds kept freezing...

"ERROR" - "Cannot Read Disc"

On any dvd in my collection.

My first player was a Pioneer...don't remember the number...DV355 or 335 or something like that. After two years of not giving any problems, it started to freeze whenever it reached the layer change.

My Sony Dream system "ate" all of my DVD/CD's. It holds 5 and wouldn't give any up.
I decided to take it apart to see if I could find a release button. Sliced my finger on the edge of the metal case. Put it back together and decided to take it back the next day (it was only about 4 days old).
Next morning got up, went up stairs to get the box to pack it up, started coming back down. And, slipped and tumbled down about 8 steps. I was basically OK, but broke about 3 spindles on the railing.
Damn thing tried to kill me. On the 2nd one now for about 5 years.

The first player I had was the creative dxr2. Though a dvd rom drive, it had a tv output and digital audio output card. It did not like to play dual layered discs at all. I had to exchange good will hunting and it took forever to read the first pressing of Seven Samurai. Also, once it got a dual layered disc going, it would often freeze at the layer change and I'd have to restart the computer.

My DVD player (Toshiba) causes the image to go nuts anytime there's a lightning bolt or a photography flash in the movie. I still have no idea why.

My first player was a Sony. About a month after buying it, audio started slipping out of sync while watching movies. Had to send it to them and get it fixed (for free thankfully).

I ran out of movies to play on it.:(

For about two weeks, the disk drawer on my Panasonic didn't want to shut all the way. Only went about half way, made a weird noise, and shut off. For some reason, it started to work again just fine...

My Proscan I bought in August 99 had sound problems right out of the box. The sound would skip for no reason whatsoever. Exchanged it for a Sony that lasted me from January 2000-September 2005.

same, and only, player i have had for 4 years now (Panasonic RV31) no problems to date.
Now after typing this i will have cursed myself.

For me it was Disney's Dinosaur. It keep skipping into new chapters for no reason on my first DVD player an RCA model. I found out that I wasn't the only person to experience this problem.

My Panasonic A120 (bought in March 1999) is still going strong! It even reads my burned discs.

My Lasonic LS-8900 multi-region is still working well, but skips and digitizes occassionally; I think when it gets too warm.

Now my third player Cyberhome CH-300 POS stopped loading discs entirely with a "No Play" message - one month after purchasing used. I told the seller about the problem, and he didn't care. It would cost about the same amount to to ship it for non-warranty repair than it cost to purchase, so I junked it.

It wasn't Progressive Scan. As far as I know, it's still works fine. I sold it to one of my roommates in college and upgraded, and I know he was still using it when we moved out.

My first player was a Panasonic A310. It still works but has problems reading some DVD's and occasionally freezes. It also gets too hot. It's now connected to an old TV in a spare room.

My first player was a Sony DVP-S3000. Still works fine after 7+ years. Admittedly it doesn't get a lot of use any more. Only plays factory DVD and CD(no =+R, cdr, mpeg 3), no 5.1(pro-logic only), no component output(composite and S-video only). Have never had a problem with it.

Perhaps I am lucky but I have never had a problem with any of my players. My first was a Mitsubishi that I sold to upgrade to a Sony which I sold. The three I have now all work just fine!

My first player was back in 99, it was a DVD / DIVX player that Circuit City was blowing out for $99. I had it for 2 months, and the open / close stopped working until I unplugged the player and pluged it back in. Then after a month of that, it stopped working altogether (no disc was inside at the time, thankfully).

Thankfully, I bought Circuit City's warranty. When they told me "you can take this thing outside, throw it on the ground, and if it's under our warranty we'll either fix it or replace it," I was sold. Took it back, they had it for about a week and called me and said "hey, this model is obsolete, they don't have the parts to fix it. We're refunding your $99 and the remainder of your warranty, come on in and get a new player."

Since that day, I've always recommended Circuit City when someone is making a purchase where a warranty is necessary.

Same player I have. Aside from the fact that it won't play discs people have burned for me off of their Tivo's, not a single problem since I got it in 12/01.

Nothing like what people have listed above. Eventually the laser transport wore out on mine, a Sony S360, I had to junk it. (fairly famous error, C:13) Then my Malata 996's power supply exploded.
