I had an early Toshiba....maybe the same above....it was a 2-disc player. I believe it still works, my brother has it now. I don't think it would play DVD+/-R's though. Not ProgressiveScan either.

I had the 1997/first gen Sony single disk player, worked great for a couple of years then stopped reading the disks-dvd or cd. I bought a Sony 5 disk changer right after that and its been flawless for about 5 years. I just hope it holds out until the dust (and prices) settle in the format war.

had a samsung dvd/vcr combo. certain discs wouldn't play, and many froze at some point of hte movie (also the on screen caused burn in on my old 60 inch mitsubishi.)

Well the first time I have a DVD related problemis on a DVD-ROM so its not really a player, but the first time I bought a DVD I thought I can play it just fine on a vanilla Windows Media Player. Silly me.

I had a Sony something-or-other, bought in 2000. It stopped reading discs, so I had the optical receiver portion replaced under warranty. Around 2003, it started freezing up, about every 7-8 movies. I had just started Netflix, and this really bothered me, so I picked up a Pioneer.

Pioneer has been a perfect player.

My Apex player would randomly eject the disc in the middle of playing. It fixed itself automatically though.

My first Samsung DVD-907 crapped out after a few days. I exchanged it for another of the same model, and that one worked for years. It probably still works, but I haven't used it in a while.

As for problems that the model itself had, it had issues with discs with seamless branching. At points where the branching was, it would repeat the previous several seconds. The Matrix also had some problems with pixelation, as the disc did for some other players at the time.

My first player, a Toshiba, had absolutely no problems. In fact, it is still working flawlessly, albeit not at my place. They really do make a good product.

Outside of the fact that it wouldn't play music on CDRs, I truly loved my first Toshiba. I still can't believe I paid nearly $300 for it.

If only my two-year-old son didn't decide to hang off of the tray, I'd probably still be using it. Learned quickly at that moment not to spend more than $100 on anything he could easily destroy.

My first and only issue with my first dvd-player was it being stolen in college in 1998 -- otherwise it work perfectly for the 4-months I had it :-)

We got our first DVD player (Panasonic A110, I think is the model) with some of our wedding money...and it's still going strong. I honestly can't think of a single issue I've had with it.

Though I replaced it with a Panasonic RP-62, which has also been flawless. Mad props to Panasonic players.

My first RCA player went up in smoke. Literally.

DarthPrime 05-27-06 12:54 AM

My first player was an AIWA. Not sure the model number. It started to drop video during playback. The audio was fine, but the screen would go black for no reason then come back.

My first DVD player is still going strong. The Sony S300. The only issue it had was no support for DTS. Sony didn't add that until the next generation of their players.

Panasonic A120, purchased in mid-1999. Still going strong in my bedroom, now that I have a recorder in the living room (also a Panny).

Rockmjd23 06-03-06 03:21 AM

First player, Sony DVP-C660, bought in late 2000 and works fine.

LiK 06-03-06 04:33 AM

the first DVD player we bought years ago was a panasonic and it still works perfectly. it's actually much more reliable than we thought but it's relegated to my sister who rarely uses it since it lacks a lot of features on today's players and it's pretty big

Deftones 06-04-06 04:19 PM

Had the Panny A-320. The Matrix was the first flick it had problems with and it all went downhill from there. :(

TheKobra 06-04-06 11:37 PM

My panasonic I purchased in 1999 is still going strong. Now I don't use it that much anymore but it must have over 1500+ hours of movies being played on it. What is the life of a DVD laser anyways?

My Toshibia SD-2600 was the first player my family ever had. We got it Christmas 2001 and it worked flawlessly until July of last year. I was watching 'Goodfellas' and all of a sudden it just shut off on its own. I was able to open and it up and save the disk but the player went into the garbage.

My Zenith HTiB I purchased last summer works great the only problem I have ever had with it is while watching 'Clerks TAS' after the end of each chapter the player will go back to the first chapter of the particular episode.
