Media Servers and PDA's

I'm thinking about getting a media server to play files from my computer through my receiver. I'm just wondering how these work. Do they come with a remote that allows you to browse music or do you still have to run things from your computer? Basically my set up is as follows. I have a desktop unit in my bedroom that I store all my mp3's on. I have a laptop that I use for just about everything else and it's usually in the office or living room. They're both on a wireless network. I'm thinking about picking up a PDA. Would I be able to keep a PDA on my coffee table and play media off my desktop through my media server?
