Best deal would be building one, imo. Honestly, I don't think I can suggest a GOOD powered sub for under $300. But if you build one, you can pick up something like an old model shiva for under $100 and get a plate amp for $100. Then spend $30 over your limit to get good building supplies. I think you will be much much much more happier with the output than any pre-made powered sub setup.

While the Daytons are the king of the Cheap subs and offer great value. Keep in mind you get what you pay for. My bare minimum recommendation for an entry level sub would be the HSU STF1.

Both JBL Northridge subs are widely respected and regarded. Many people consider them to be right below SVS and HSU. Both are below $300.
