Okay i tried doing a search and just came up with alot of information about dvd recorders regardless of the search terms i used.

My cable company(Cox) offers a dvr box that you can record television to, its basically the same thing as tivo im assuming. My question is are there any boxes out their that I can buy and hook up to my cable so I dont have to rent the box from them and pay a monthly fee. If so any advice on some decent well priced dvr boxes?

There's really only Tivo left, I believe. The boxes are going fairly cheaply these days, but you still have the monthly fee. That is $13/month, IIRC. Or for $300 you can get the Lifetime usage setup with no monthly fees.

Keep in mind that if you want digital channels, you need to have a cable box anyway. You may as well get the DVR box, it is probably very similar in price. It's not nearly the same as Tivo, but it does record TV for time shifting. You will get better picture quality from the cable DVR than from a standalone.

You can also use a PC as a DVR. If you have one that is capable, it won't cost much to use it as a DVR. Otherwise it costs whatever such a PC costs, or at least some new HDDs to have enough space.

Cool. I hadn't bothered to look recently, and you seldom hear anything about them. Do they still have the commercial skipping features? Or did they take those out as rumored?

I think the new models don't have them. It is still pretty easy to jump commercials though: 2 + "quick-skip" = 2 minute jump.

With one button press you skip through the commercials (1 button click versus automatic on the old models)
