US purchased DVDs won't work in UK. Why?

Hi - new to this forum, so forgive me if this question has already been asked. Had relatives from England here in the US recently and they purchased some DVDs to take home - cannot access/view them in their UK player. Anyone that can explain why to me? And/or what we can do to fix this? Thanks in advance.

Their player in the UK may not be region free. UK is R2, US is R1. Region free players are more common in the UK than the US, but that doesn't mean they have one. Also, their player may not convert NTSC (US TV standard) to PAL (UK TV standard.)
