re: additional rear speakers
I'm pretty sure I already know the answer is 'no', but I thought I'd toss this one out there:
I have a 5.1 setup at home, with my two rear speakers mounted on the wall pointing down. Unfortunately, with the odd room structure, there really is only one ideal "sweet" spot for the surrounds (perfect for me, less so for three or more viewers), so I was speculating what would happen if I ran a second set of rear speakers placed in a different area.
I already know moving the existing speakers would be the best idea, but for now that's not a viable option.
Would this second set idea work?

Seems to work ok for commercial theaters. If you are a serious perfectionist, it would complicate your setup with test discs and whatnot. But it might also make a better sound possible, even if more complicated.
You'd have to have additional amp channels or you could damage your receiver trying to run 4 speakers out of 2 amp channels.

What kind of rear speakers do you have? You could try changing them to a bipole or a dipole speaker depending on where you can mount them.
