I just got a new 57 inch hd for the basement (graduation gift) and the dvd picture has a bluish tint and has several dots on the screen. (and is not in 16x9 mode even though the dvd is anamorphic (pearl harbor)

How do you have it hooked up to the TV? If you are using component, verify that the cables are hooked up correctly (red to red, blue to blue, green to green).
Regarding the 16x9 mode, there should be a setting in the menu on your DVD player to set the output to widescreen. It is probably currently set to full screen, which is many times the default on DVD players.

1) Output set to YrCb
2) Set TV to 16x9
