Almost everybody says Pioneer are the best overall burners. That puts the 533 in your sights. Panasonic is also well-rated, and the latest run of players has much improved LP recording (4 hour). So now many rate the Pannys with the Pioneers. Panny EH50 is the latest. I only have a cheap one, so I can't really comment.

I have 2 Pioneer 420s and a Toshiba XS-32 which I'm very happy with. These are the previous models before the new batch which have implemented the EPG. Many people are having problems associated with the EPG on the Pioneers (the Toshiba camp seem to be less vocal, so I don't know), though the picture quality is great. You may want to read further at some A/V dedicated forums, like AVS Forum.

Thanks for the responses guys. I have been checking the other forum and I am really confused with all of the chatter on different brands. I want to rephrase my question a little. What DVR will work well with a Direct TV TIVO and a seperate VCR in the mix?

I have the Panny E80 and it's a gift from God. You can input any source and record directly to DVD-R or record on to the hard drive, edit and then burn to disc. Has 2, 4, and 6 hour speed. Also has flexible record where you can set it to the exact minute instead of using one of the preset modes. Also has high speed dubbing from HD to DVD-R and vice verse with DVD-RAM. This is my second Panny recorder, have burned hundreds of discs and never had a problem.

Thanks everyone. Bit on a Panny DMREH50S. Found open box for $319. Spent about 2 hrs getting it all hooked up to work properly with my VCR,Direct TV w/Tivo,DVD player, and TV. Im diggin it. Still do not have enough inputs though. Kinda had to rig it a little but it's not that much of a inconvenience. DVD Player only has 5.1 Audio outputs and not a seperate audio output. I'll spend tomorrow learning more about editing and such. How would you guys hook this up if you had the following. I really want to be Able to control everything from my reciever.

I would also recommend a Pioneer DVD Recorder. I have had one for a while now it is still working fine. I have had no problems with it.

So, you have an A/V receiver? I have all my stuff routed through my receiver. Then one of the Record Out outputs goes to the DVDR so I can pick whatever source I want to record.

Some receivers have an extra circuit so you can watch one thing on the Monitor Out, and record another on the Record Out or Zone 2 Out. Other receivers have outputs, but you can only record what you are watching at the same time. Either way, it allows for switching to whichever you want to record.
