Rainbow Effect on LCD? Help!?
I was looking at some of the DLP & LCD comparison threads & a drawback of DLPs was a rainbow effect. I just got a 60" Sony Grand Wega XS LCD & see something directly in the middle of the screen that looks prismatic (more liquid though- like oil in water). You can only see it when the center is white or another bright/light color. When it's a darker color you can't see it at all. It's not so bright that you can't see the picture, but I can notice it. I didn't see this as a problem for LCDs anywhere & was wondering if this is normal? I thought maybe it was where the lamp is or something.

Please, anyone with an LCD set. Do you see this on yours? I need to know before my 30 or 90 days runs out so I can call someone. But I have a feeling they'd probably say it's normal even if it's not, so I wanted some input from others with LCD before I called.

I don't know what is causing the problem, but if it bothers you now, take it back! You don't want to be kicking yourself in a year. There is no shame in returning something that does not look like you thought it should. Especially with as much as I'm sure you paid for it.

I just got a 60" Sony KF60WE610 and I dont have this problem. Have you tried adjusting the picture? Perhaps you have sharpness turned up very high? Does it show up while watching SD broadcast signals or at EVERY resolution? Is the brightness up too high?
This is a great TV with lots of tweaks you can perform to get the best pic.

If this is the same TV as yours, what did you pay for it if you dont mind me asking.

You might also be seeing "Silk Screen Effect" (NOT the same as 'screen door effect') The sonys handle the 'SDE' the best out of most RP-LCDs out there now. You wont see it if you're sitting at least 6 feet away.
From AVSforum:
"Will you see a "silk screen effect" or some sort of screen shimmer / texturing? Yes. These screens have an anti-glare coating that gives the image a sort of shimmer, particularly with very bright content. This is easily observed at normal seating distance."
I have seen this before but its really not a problem to me. Its not always evident.
It seems to be related to the screen material itself -- particularily the non-glare ones. DLP can have this effect as well.

You might want to check out if others see what you are seeing. In my case it was "No" so I believe it is my eyes/perceptual processes.
If it bothers you - return it and try something else.
