Help setting up a Philips 30PF9946

Hello, my parents got a new widescreen TV, and I'm setting it up for them. They got the Philips 30PF9946 30" Widescreen LCD, they also have the Philips DVP642 DVD Player. I hooked up the dvd player to the TV via component cable/ the red/ green blue. You can tell I'm a noob.

I have the TV on Widescreen 16:9 and the dvd player sending the signal on 16:9 and components as well. I see the picture, but the issue is there are still black bars on top and bottom. Mock Up

I read the FAQ that was pinned up top and made sure the dvds I was testing was 1.85:1, still black bars even when there's no dvd and I'm just on the menu. I thought once you have a widescreen TV, the movie should fit nicely without having to zoom.

Another thing, when I turned on progressive scan on the dvd player, the screen just started scrolling and it went back to non progressive. Am I missing something? Should I use another cable? I called Philips Tech Support, and they told me that the tv supports progressive scan. Now if that's suppose to be normal, then that's cool, but it's been bothering me. So if anyone here has/had any experience with this TV or had similar issues, pls contribute. Thank you.
