Display of 4x3 dvds on widescreen tv

My Toshiba SD 4800 has an option to display progressive 4X3 pictures as 4X3 and not to stretch them, even though my Hitachi widescreen tv is set to the widescreen mode. Most other dvd players I have hooked to the tv require me to toggle through the various modes and set the tv to 4X3. This is annoying when a disc goes back and forth with aspect ratios, but at least the picture is ok on 4x3 material. But when watching non-anamorphic letterbox dvds, I found that it was impossible to set the tv to a full widescreen mode without either losing picture information or stretching the picture. This is not the case on my 4800; the letterbox movie displays fine on the screen, but with black bars on the left and right, in addition to the top and bottom. Using the zoom feature one step, it fills the screen nearly perfectly.
Are there other dvd players that allow display of 4x3 pictures as 4x3? I picked up the new Toshiba SD-6915 and it does not do that.
