Widescreen TV and Black Bars?

When watching dvd's on my HD television should I still have black bars on the top and bottom of the screen? I have the 16X9 mode on and the progressive scan mode on but I still have them. Is that normal? For some reason I thought that if I watch a wide screen movie on a widescreen tv those go away? Am I completely wrong or do I have something setup wrong?

A 1.85 or 1.77 aspect ratio movie will fill your screen

A 2.35 or 2.40 aspect ratio movie won't.

Take your 16 and divide by 9 and you'll see what I mean

also keep in mind any non-anamorphic titles that you may have - in those, the black bars are actually part of the video image, enginered to provide the theatrical aspect ratio, on standard 4:3 televisions, however when you play them on a 16:9 television, you have to put it in stretch mode to get the proper proportions, becasue the embedded black bars are being read as part of what needs to be displayed and you lose some resolution on the stretch (not that you really had it in the first place as most non-anamorphic transfers are sh!t to begin with) - thats why non-anamorphic transfers suck and why some people buy the SE versions when they are re-released, as most studios see the mistake - after having taken your money the first time around, of course.
