Thoughts on mobile DVD system at Sam's?

Searched and didn't find anything so ...

Anyone have any experience with the mobile DVD system that they have at Sam's? It's something like $378 for:

* 2 7" LCD widescreens that hang from the front seats for the rear passengers
* 1 DVD player with stereo audio and some ins/outs
* carrying case

I can't remember the brand and it's a no-name anyway, but for $378 it seems worth the risk. It'd be nice for summer road trips for the kids.

Any thoughts or any other cheap mobile systems I should consider? Thanks.

I am thinking about this setup. We are going to take a trip with our infant son whom is still in a rear facing car seat, and this set up may allow me to get a monitor for him to watch w/o having to permanently attach a screen somewhere.

I'll let you know how it turns out. Unless someone chimes in in the next day or so with "Don't get it!!!" I'm gonna get it. Sam's is very good returns in case it sucks.

We're going away this weekend and want to use it for at least some of the 4+ hour drive. Don't want to use it as a sedative, just for relaxation when my 2-year-old is tired of talking and singing and won't sleep (or won't let his 8-mo.-old brother sleep).

That seems like an extremely small screen. I have a camera with a screen a bit over 1.75" and it's tiny.

I think this one has two 7 inch screens, not a 2.7" screen.

Nevermind.

Duh! I don't know where I got the"." from. Guess I was just thinking it was really cheap!

Act fast!!!

We went to get this last night in Annapolis, MD and they're gone. A Sam's worker said they just disappeared a few days ago. I'm going to check another store or two this morning and hope to get lucky.

Just got one at Sam's in Waldorf, MD.

Went to Landover first and they were out. And while I was looking at them in Waldorf, an employee came up with a scanner, counted and scanned the boxes and said "good timing 'cause when they're gone they're gone." So I bought it. They have about 10 left (as of noon Tues. 5/4).

The set up looks nicer than I remember. The 7" screens are a nice size and you can have different inputs going to each screen - e.g., DVD on one screen and GBA on the other. It comes with home and car power plugs, 2 headphones, remote and a nice case. Seems well built.

One interesting thing is that the words "Multi disc DVD player" are printed on the player itself, which I'm not sure what that means b/c nowhere does the box say it's a DVD changer. If it is, that'll be a nice bonus. Haven't read through the manual yet.

Price is $399 and seems worth it.

Just got down playing around with the system for about an hour. It's actually pretty nice, esp. for $400. Some notes:

* Set up is very easy. Build quality is decent. Mostly plastic but not really flimsy. The case is great; the whole system collapses down into a package smaller than a standard backpack and weighs only about 8 lbs.

* The LCDs look good. 7" is plenty big enough for a viewing distance of 3' or so in the backseat. They have a wide viewing angle, and tilt to almost any angle. The picture can be flipped in case you have to hang the screen upside down - nice feature. Standard pic controls are present: brightness, contrast, tint, color but nothing more extensive. They have a pretty solid protective screen.

* I sampled the opening of the Matrix with the very detailed computer graphics, Gandalf battling the demon (name???) and becoming the white wizard in LOTR:TTT with the detailed fire, water and snow images, opening scene of Aliens when that machine scans the foggy interior of the Sulaco escape shuttle, and the opening scenes of Finding Nemo. All looked very good.

* It's not a DVD changer. The "multi-disc" refers to CD, MP3, VCD, etc.

* Audio leaves a lot to be desired. There's a constant white noise that sounds like the disc spinning but that's really only an annoyance during quiet passages. The speakers below the LCDs are tinny with little low end. For example, the low pulse that the Aliens scanner makes as it passes the camera was pretty much lost on the speakers. A "mega-bass" option would be good. The headphones sound better on the low end.

* There's an S-video out, coax digital out and analog audio/video outs. It doesn't say it passes DTS but I haven't confirmed that. There are analog inputs for audio and video for gaming, camcorder or digital camera.

* The remote is not intuitive but it works. It has all the standard DVD controls, plus a zoom control that's pretty cool. I've never had that on any of my players and it looks better than I expected.

* It comes with home and car power adapters.

* 90 day warranty.

All in all, I'm satisfied.

Can you provide a link to the product page on the manufacturer's site by any chance? Or maybe just the product make and model? It sounds too good to be true and I just want to check it out first if possible.

Thanks.

In some Sam's they might have this on display so that you can check it out in person. The State College, PA, Sam's does. And remember that Sam's has an excellent return policy so if you don't like it you can always return it.

BTW, it worked great on our 4-hour trip up from DC area on Thursday. The only thing we watched was Finding Nemo but it kept my 2-year-old occupied during a stretch of the drive where he usually gets fidgety and impatient and can't be placated.

So a big thumbs-up for this system.
