I need some recommendations on a new DVD player for under $100. It looks like my old GoVideo DVD player is on its last leg and needs to be replaced.

I recently bought an Apex 1110W for the kids playroom and it has turned out to be a great little player for $40. My question is if I should just get another Apex or would I see an improvement with a little better player.

Also it seems that the Apex 1110W is getting hard to find. What other Apex models are people using successfully?

You should really look beyond Apex.

That is kind of the reason for this post is because I am looking for a good DVD player besides APEX. It is a good player for the kids to use but I want something a little better to complement my new HT.

There are so many to choose from now-a-days that I wanted to see what others have had luck with.

There are a lot of good players for under $100 now. I'd look at the Toshibas. They've been getting loads of great reviews.

Toshbia makes a good DVD player for the money. You can also get the single disc Sony player for $99 on sale sometimes.

Can you define what good player means to you? Are you looking for good PQ? Do you need a progressive player or want just component output? Is the chroma bug an issue for you? Does it need to play multiple formats such as video and MP3 and do you need DVD-R, DVD-RW, etc. compatibility? Or does good simply mean one that will last beyond a year or two?

It might help if I list my HT setup thus far. Toshiba 55" RPTV, Onkyo 760 surround system, Motorola HighDef DVR Cable box and an old GoVideo DVD Player that was a gift. I had the Toshiba calibrated about 3-4 months ago and the picture is awesome.

Right now the DVD Player has a bad pixelation problem. There is also alot of pausing and jittering. This happens with all kinds of DVDs including store-bought. It is especially bad with home movies on DVD +/- R.

The only thing I really want is the ability to play recordable DVDs and normal store-bought DVDs without pausing and pixelation. I have read that progressive scan will only work if your TV can handle it and I don't even know if my slightly older Toshiba can handle the extra lines. My receiver and TV can do both composite and the regular S-Video connections so that is not a big deal to me.

I have been looking at some Toshiba DVD players but couldn't decide on a particular model. What models are you guys using?

i am using the tosh sd-4900 and it works great. Plays everything i have thrown at it with no problems and can easily become region free with a simple tool. Also guess the price dropped a little bit and can be found for something like 60-70bucks.

Given that you have the Onkyo surround sound system, you might want to look for the single-disc Onkyo DVD player. Can't remember the model number off the top of my head, but it's the one that typically sells for around $150, but can often be found on sale at Fry's and other stores for $100. The cool thing is that you can plug one extra cord (which comes with the DVD player) from the receiver to the DVD player, and the receiver remote can be used to control the DVD player. That's what I have, and it works well...
