Sub Advice? (Infinity BU-120)
Well, after 4 years I've finally hooked up a sub to my low rent system.
The Long Story:
Freinds of ours got parts to a over-engineered audio system when they bought their house. They didn't know how to hook up their new DVD player and receiver, so they called me. I got there and found they had big ole infinity fronts and two Infinity BU-120s. Since they'd been watching their DVDs through the TV they were amazed at what a difference a decent receiver and speaker setup makes.
They gave me one of the subs for fixing them up. I solved their cable modem issue as well, and am going to give them a center speaker (they dont' have one).
Anyway I'm a total noob in regards to sub-setup. I have a dedicated line out from my craptastic multi-function receiver/cd changer/dual tapedeck. So do I mess with the crossover (since no speakers are running through it)? Also anyone have a recommended volume setting for this sub?
Thanks!
*Extra info:
I have it in the corner of a fairly large living room with hardwood floors behind a mammoth cabinet. I'm using Energy Take 5 speakers.

Nope.
I am not sure why we even keep these features on the subs now. They just confuse people.
If your craptastic (
) has sub out then run a RCA cable from there to the sub in on the BU-12. Connect you speakers to the craptastic and let the crossover in the receiver do the work. Set the speakers to either large or small and put the sub on. BINGO!
These features were for back before AV receivers when we just used amps and tuners. These had no cut off for the speakers or the subs so some way we need to tell the speakers where to roll of. So the sub came with a crossover. You would run all the output wires to the sub first which had a band pass network in it and then on to the speakers with the new filtered signal. Now all of this is handled in the receiver.

I've been experimenting with the volume, and I've turned it down quite a bit. This sucker shakes my windows pretty easily.
I'm a happy camper.

Set the low-pass filter crossover to the highest number possible. Turn the high-pass filter crossover to 80hz. Change the option on the sub from internal crossover to external crossover. Set the receiver to crossover at 80hz. Set all speakers which can't go too low to 'small'. Turn on some good music/movies loud. Have fun pissing off your neighbors.
