Subwoofer question

Is it common for a subwoofer to just die? I have had my Kenwood HTB 503 system for almost 4 years and noticed today that I wasn't getting any bass. I took a look at it and the subwoofers power light wasn't on. I unplugged it then plugged it back in and still no light came on. The receiver and everything is set properly so I figure the problem has to lie in the subwoofer. Has anyone else had a similar experience? If my sub is dead what is a good new one that is under $200, thanks for the help.

it happened to me. I had a sub die. I figured I had a power surge and it just died.

You should at least look first to see if there's a fuse somewhere in the sub. That might've just blown, and is an easy fix. If you're looking for a new sub, I highly suggest SVS. Very good, and very reasonably priced.

I think these subs are a lot more than $200....

umm..yeah.. i think svs would be a "bit" of an overkill for this system.

check that you didn't blow the Power outlet that the sub was plugged into. I mean, plug something in to it that you are sure is working.

On a budget, check out the refurb's over at the Onkyo site. While not always in stock, one of the best parts is they often include free shipping.

I decided to try and fix it myself and for once I actually fixed something. 2 of the 3 fuses inside were blown. Thank you all for your help.
