Progresive Scan Question

Will I see any improved quality on a standard 4x3 direct view television if I upgrade to a progresive scan DVD player?

This is probably a common question, but any help or links to old thread would help.

Thanks guys.

Nope. Your set won't even be able to handle the signal.

This is not quite true. While it is true for the vast majority of 4x3 Tube TV's will not do progressive scan, there are some that will accept and display a progressive scan picture. Check your owners manual to see if it does accept progressive scan or not. The easiest way to see if it does not handle progressive scan is whether it has Component inputs. If you have no Component inputs there is no way it will do progressive scan. If you do have Component inputs it still may not handle progressive scan in which case the owners manual is needed.

True, but I figured the word "standard" more related to the capabilities of the set, not that it was a 4x3 or a tube. I wouldn't expect an HDTV-capable 4x3 set to be called a "standard 4x3 direct view television".

But there are also a few 480p 4x3 TV's out there that would not be HD and thus standard would apply to those, although it can be a matter of symantics with descriptions of what ones TV is.

Interesting. I didn't know there were consumer-type 480p 4x3 sets that weren't what would be called HDTV-capable or HiDef or whatever. Are they old ones? What are they?

I would be fascinated to learn about these non-HDTV 480p standard tube TV's also. This may be what I'm looking for, could you please post a model # or two so I can check them out?

I have a 4:3 Sony XBR wega 32 inch in my bedroom and it does HDTV(1080i) and 480P. Most newer 4:3 sets have at least 480p capability.

Most newer 4:3 sets will have component video input, but unless it's an HDTV it won't have 480p capability. If there's a non-HDTV set out there that has 480p ability, please post a link to it.

No model names come to mind at the moment (and I don't have time to search now) but I'm sure one of the European members can help out as they had these type TV over there as well.

I thought to use a progressive scan DVD your tv has to have progressive scan inputs?? These inputs are separate from the white/red/yellow RCA plus, they are ONLY for Progressive Scan...am I wrong?

See the first post of FrankS in this thread. Therein lies your answer.
