Anyone know when the first Widescreen TV was made and sold?

I would have thought within the past 10 or so years but after reading that Elvis had one in 1973 I guess they are pretty old..

Anyone with any info or history would be great..thanx..

This says Thomson introduced the first widescreen in the U.S. in 1993 and this says Philips introduced the first widescreen in Europe in 1990.

Hard to believe it's only been about 10 years.

I was reading something about Elvis' recording at the legendary Stax studio in 1973..
It was a monday night and upset he was going to miss Monday Night Football he bought a bunch of widescreen TV's and had them delivered to the studio so he wouldnt miss the game..

Maybe they just meant that the TVs were really big. "Widescreen" (when referring to televisions) probably didn't mean the same thing back then as it does today. (Besides, it's not like they were broadcasting football games in widescreen back then...)

Yeah, lots of people mistakenly referred to RPTVs as widescreen sets back in the 80s!
