how do you check to see if optical cable is bad?
I know that there is a red light where the optical cable plugs in, so if I were to plug the cable in and then look at the other end of the cable would I be able to see light. For some reason I am not getting sound from my receiver and I am wondering if it is the optical cable. RCA cables seem to work.

I would first check the settings on your receiver to make sure digital audio is enabled for whatever video input you are using. Also check your DVD players settings for the same.

I used to work in the Data Comm Dept, all we did to check if the Fiber cable is good was to shine a light down the cable - if you see the light on the other end, the cable is good.
