I Need Sub Woofer Help
I have a bit of a problem. I enjoy watching live concert DVD's and the last two I purchased will not play through my sub in either Dolby 5.1 or DTS. If I play them in Prologic or PCM, the sub works fine. All of my other DVD's work fine when playing in DTS or 5.1, but the latest two (Kiss Symphony and Motley Crue Videos) will not. I thought it may be a problem with the DVD itself but it plays at a friends house fine. I thought it may be the DVD player, but it plays my U2 Go Home DVD perfectly. I've been over every possible setting on my receiver and player and I cannot figure it out.
I really dont know what the problem is, but it's frustrating having no bass for a live show.
Any help would be appreciated.

Not familiar with that Sony. But I will let you know, that I have four subwoofer settings on my Onkyo. First mode: redirects all the low freqs. from all speakers. Mode2: redirects low freqs. from surrounds. Mode3: plays the LFE from DD & DTS tracks only. Mode4: sub off. Now I too played the same Motley Crue disc in DD 5.1 in mode 3 and did not get any bass, but when I turned the sub to mode1, the walls shock. So, I would see if the Sony has a similar config. and play all your audio discs in a mode1 and all movies in mode3. Don't know if this helps. Note, even though I played the disc in mode1 it was still outputting DD 5.1.

Thank you very much, you put me on the right track. On my sony receiver, you can select "large" or "small" for each of your rears, center and fronts. I had each in the default setting of large, when I changed them to small it redirected the low frequencies to the sub. Everything works fine now. Here's another question for you, where should my LFE setting be. I have the choice of 0db to -20db and Muting. Not really sure what this does and I don't hear much change when I alter the settings.
Thanks again

My Onkyo receiver's manual recommend the following LFE
settings as follows : For Dolby Digital tracks settings at 0db
For DTS tracks settings at +10db
and I belived the recommendations strongly. I had my sub
driver blown out when accidentally set for DD tracks to +8db
when playing Saving Pte Ryan. Luckily the sub was still under
warranty and the driver was replaced FOC.
So therefore it's advisable to check out your receiver's op manual
to determine the LFE settings recommended.
