DVD Player scratching disks?

I just got the West Wing and Two Towers box sets from Amazon. Upon watching the TT disc 2 it started skipping and eventually froze. So I thought it was a disc defect...

Now I started watching West Wing and it too started skipping. Could my player be scratching the disks because i have small scratches on new disks which are causing my player to freeze? All input welcome. thanks.

If your player isn't level it will scratch the discs. Even the slightest angle is enough to do this on some players. Just an idea.

Also check your discs for scratches as soon as you open them. I've had several new discs lately that had scratches on them. They were all Warner Brothers titles. Some were covered in scratches and some have had one deep scratch.

They were all secure in the case. You wouldn't expect the discs to be scratched but they were.

well i'm sending them back to amazon to get new ones. i'll be sure to double check this next time because i played another test disc last night from beginning to end and no skipping or scratching. this has me confused....i guess new discs are coming scratched now.
