Unfortunately, my HTIB didn't come with DTS and so I'm lookin for one player that can decode it on board via just connecting it digitally thru coax or optical fiber. I'm in the market for a new DVD player for two main reason, DTS decoding as well as free region playing. I was looking at CyberHome 500 (about $70-$80 at my local Frys) but I was wondering if you guys had any other suggestions?

This won't work.

If the DVD player has a DTS decoder, it will pass this decoded signal via 6 analog cables. The only DTS signal that goes over coax or optical would be an encoded signal, which your HTiB apparently can't do anything with.

Unless your HTiB has a 5.1 (i.e., 6) analog input, you won't be able to get DTS.

HHmm, is that so? I don't understand completely, but I'll take your word for it. I thought that by connecting it thru coax or opti that I'll still be able to get DTS, but I guess not as my HT doesn't have 6 analog input. I guess it's time to take advantage of my Compusa replacement plan and just get a new one that has an onboard DTS decoder.

What Stevet says is right.

A DVD player that does DTS is going to do it in 1 of 2 ways.

#1: By passing the raw signal along via digital coax or optical to a receiver that can decode DTS.

#2: By actually decoding the DTS itself and passing the the already decoded audio to a receiver via the 5.1 / 6.1 analog audio outputs for the receiver to amplify.

It sounds like your setup won't do either, which isn't all that surprising for many HTIB's.

Steve's right. Believe him. The decoder on a DVD player will output 6 analog channels for DTS. You need a receiver with 6 analog inputs to play the signal. The digital signal passed from DVD player to a receiver (via coax or optical) is *not* 'decoded.'

How old is your htib? It seems to me that all the ones (could be wrong) currently for sale even the ones at Kmart can do dts.

I just purchased mine not too long ago about June 2003...for sale at Compusa for $99.99 and at the time other stores sold it for about $199.99 - $249.99. I hadn't known so much about DTS or DD so I just picked this system up because it was cheap.

Here's a website from Radioshack of the HTIB that I have...should I trade it in? Is DTS worth all the trouble and extra money? As for region free playing and raw mpeg/avi play I might just get a stand alone DVD player....any suggestions?

I looked at the owner's manual, and there is no dts decoder in the receiver. If this is all you can afford, go with it and enjoy. But if you can afford a little better, I would do better. MOST, not all, of the time, dts is better. It's usually clearer with better separation. If you have a receiver with a dts decoder, your dvd player doesn't HAVE to have a decoder, but it's good to have one in both, in case one quits working.
