Dishnetwork and PVR's
I know that dishnetwork offers different DVR/PVR's I have the basic on with the 30 hours I believe.
I know that tivo makes one specific for directtv customers. Is there any compatibility issues with buying my own PVR and using it with my dishnetwork recievers?
Or should I only get it through them?
Thanks

The normal Tivo units will work fine with dish network. Basically what they do is when you schedule something with Tivo it will take over control of your dish receiver via infrared control to change to the appropriate channel, etc.
However - I believe the quality would be better just using the Dish Network PVR units than the Tivo. With the dish ones, its recording the satellite feed directly so there is no quality loss on playback. With the Tivo, it has to record the analog output from the dish receiver, so there will be some quality loss. I don't have any first hand experience though to really say if its noticeable enough to worry about.
Unfortunately there is no Tivo specifically for dish like there is for directv. So the decision basically comes down to the tradeoffs between functionality, image quality, and cost.

Dish network 510 dvr
FYI. Dish Network is running an upgrade special for current subscribers that for $99 you can get a 510 PVR which is 100 hours. You have to commit to a year and a monthly $4.98 charge.

Steve, funny you should mention this. I just upgraded last week from a 301 basic receiver to a 510 DVR. Reason being, I had a bad s-video jack on my basic receiver so I called DN about replacing it. Asked if they had any deals on PVRs & got the same deal you mentioned. FWIW, my brother tells me TiVo charges $12.95 per month for their subsrciption.... so it's a real good deal.

okay sorry to dig up this thread so late again thanks everyone for the information. I think I will just hold off on the PVR for now. I already have one and I hear that TIVO is making one with a dvd recorder built in. For about 800 dollars. I am going to wait till it comes down more.
