YAS?: Yet another speaker question
I am very happy with my subwoofer and will be keeping that. With that said:
I want 5 new speakers. I don't want to go with the tiny satellite big sub mix. I would prefer to have some decent midrange to go with my highs.
I don't have enough room up front to have towers, so large bookshelf speakers will have to do. This will require shielded speakers to sit on top of my 50" Toshiba set.
I recently read an article about matching the tonal qualities etc... being a major pain when you don't have 5 of the exact same speaker. I can understand this. How can a 5.5" midrange sound the same as a 6.5" midrange? When you have dual 5.5" mids with a single 1" tweeter, how can that match up with a single 8" woof, 6.5" mid and 1" tweet?
I've recently been enamored with B&Ws 600 series but to the best of my knowledge, only their center channels are shielded.
These speakers will be plugging into a Sony DA 4ES receiver.
Canvassing thoughts or comments and recommendations based on this criteria.

This might be under your budget, and radar, but Audio Advisor still has Mirage FRX-3 Monitor speakers for $150 shipped. The MSRP on these was $350.
http://www.audioadvisor.com/store/pr...?sku=MIRFRX3CH
Use Coupon Code: FREESHIPPING at Checkout for, you guessed it, free shipping.
I bought a pair of these in June for the same price. These are an outstanding value.
The only downside would be finding a matching center or buying 3 pairs (for a mere $450!), using one as a center, and selling/saving/6.1-ing the other one.
Let me know if you have any specific questions about these.
Re-reading your post, I noticed these would be going on top of your TV. How wide and deep is that? You might be better off, sound-wise, putting speakers on a wall. Of course, I have no idea what your room looks like.

Actually, better to put speakers on stands. it is always good to have space behind them and *avoid* putting them on a wall! Next best option is indeed on top of the tv. (Which I'm sure has plenty of room!)
You don't need to go too big--many smallish speakers have fine response down to 80 hz or so, at which point the signal is routed to the sub. And in that range signals are nondirectional, so you're not compromising much by not having front speakers that handle bass well.
As for speakers, I'd suggest the NHT SuperOnes and an NHT center--they're great for music and HT, good neutral response and reasonably priced.

Good choice!
