DVD Players cause disc scratches?

Does this happen? I just put in a brand new disc, walked away sort of forgot about it, came back (I think it had been spinning away on the menu screen), and there was a small 1/4 arc scratch on the disc, not large, i doubt it would cause a skip.

What happened?

Either your player's not leveled, or you didn't clean the tray before puttting the disc in, leaving some junk in there caused the scratch. Use compressed air.

Either something is out of alignment in your player or the disc was scratched prior to being put into the player.

Nothing inside the player touches the disc.
