Widescreen questions
Does a 16:9 TV use the PAL/NTSC system (in their own countries) like a standard 4:3 TV?
If so, does this mean that the resolution of a 16:9 TV is exactly the same as a 4:3 TV?
If that is the case, does that mean that when watching a 4:3 program on a 16:9 set (with proper proportions/black bars along sides of screen), the resolution of the image area will be lower than when displayed on a 4:3 TV?

While I can't say for certain about PAL displays on a NTSC display the resolution is the same but most 16:9 TVs have an internal line doubler that increases the resolution from 480 interlaced to 480 progressive or 540 progressive. Because of this the scan lines become virtually invisible and in the case of tvs that convert to 540p the resolution is increased but might have some conversion artifacts.
