dunno if this has been covered here b4, but I saw a blurb on these in a magazine... basically just a DVD player that sends the info via the DVI on your HDTV so no digital-to-analog conversion is necessary. Sposed to look pretty nice in 480p, better than "high end" dvd players using component supposedly. As an added bonus, the player does MPEG-4 and Divx flicks too. All for a paltry $199. Anyone have one yet? picture quality reviews?

yeah i read that... that if ur tv converts everything to analog then using the DVI cable-equipped dvd player wont matter. That said, how do you know if your tv does this type of conversion? My dad has a 51" Sony HDTV he bought just this last x-mas. Dont know the model number... but is there a simple way to know if its digital or not?

the only adavantage of this player is if your display has a DVI input.
very few do, especially if your display is one or two years old.
via the DVI connection, the signal is kept entirely digital.
on some displays, with some material you can upscale the signal to 720p and 1080i.
otherwise, the use of the player thru its component outputs is said to be poorer than many others available now.
in addition i think i read the sound quality of this unit is nothing speacial either.
in short, worth the $200 if your display has a DVI input.
if not, ignore it.

oh btw, the player runs divx/mpeg4 stuff also, so it does do "something" other than just have a dvi output.

The Bravo has analouge video via the component output. If you want a full rundown, I'd suggest reading the Secrets Shootout on progressive players:

It'll work with any type of dvi capable display...the problem is that people are finding some sets and projectors incompatible.
