does it always do it on the same disc or is it random even using the same disc?

I assume you made sure the dvd was clean?

what model number and what dvd's specifically have you had a problem with?

it did it last night during a rented copy of the bone collector. with catch me if you can, it went back a few scene's, but since these are rented copies, there is no chance of knowing if it happens all the time. Also once you go to find the scene again, after fast forwarding to the right part, it doesn't do it again

so it only has done it on two rental copies?

if so I would not be too worried about it.

I had a problem with that happening on one of my DVDs, once. I took it out and noticed a huge piece of fuzz on the disc, removed the debris, and have never had the problem again.

Sounds like typical behavior of a dirty or scratched disc. Clean the disc with some Windex and a soft cloth. Works for everything except the worst scratches.
