I'm now hooked on front projection
My wife brought home a projector and laptop that she uses sometimes in training sessions with her job. I took a look at the projector and saw that it handles high definition and has component inputs. A light bulb immediately appeared over my head. I rolled the 50-inch Toshiba off to the side and hooked this bad boy up to my home theater. Projecting onto a blank white wall at a size of almost 100 inches, I saw an image that put my TV to shame.
The projector is a Viewsonic PJ551.
At only $1600-$1800, I gotta get one. The 50 inch looks so small compared to it. I can't imagine how good it would look projected onto an actual screen. I know that I could make it at least 120 inches by moving it back farther, but I need longer cables.
I am now in the process of begging her to allow us to get one.

Lots of good info on projectors for HT, including several in the $1,000-$1,800 range (such as the Panasonic PT-L300U and the Infocus X1).

If you have the room, the desire and the interest there is no doubt that a projector is a better way to go. Just make sure you do enough research to understand all the variables first.
Good luck!

There are definitely better choices for that price range, with much better contrast (perhaps the most important spec to look for).
But you're right, as long as you have the room, and good ambient light control, front projection is the way to go.

new bathroom???...that sounds a lot more expensive than a front projection system! plus, that will no doubt result in her taking even longer to get ready to go out.
