Looking for information on HD projectors

Not a projection TV, but an actual projector... I've see them anywhere from 1,300-10,000$ and am seriously considering getting one for a few reasons. It's big, it's HD, and it's portable. I probably wouldn't want to spend more than 1500$, but...

Problem is, I can't seem to find any stores that have anything but the most expensive models on display, and I can't seem to find anyone working at those stores who knows the first thing about them...

Do I need to buy a screen of some sort to project it on? How much are they? Will simply projecting it on a wall work?

How's the picture quality? The color? Any comparisons to a regular tube TV, a flatscreen TV, and a flatscreen HD TV would be good...

Do they have to be a certain distance from the projection surface? Do I have to worry about burn in?

Anybody have one that can share some info? Or at least have a comprehensive web site that could help me out?

And I'm sorry - I'm sure this has been asked 100 times over. But I didn't see anything in the FAQ or browsing through older posts, so...

Those are a lot of questions to answer!

I suggest you read some articles at Projector Central to start. After that, the most knowledgeable place on the web on this topic that I've found are the projector boards at AVSForum.

Start with Projector Central. They are an excellent resource and will answer many of your starter questions.

well for $1500 you're looking at the infocus X1. if you can spend a few more bucks you can get yourself the Panasonic L300U ($2000) or the Sony HS-10 ($2500.) the prices on these bad boys are coming down...you can get an excellent projector for less than a rear projection set and have yourself a true home theater. i'm 176 days away from purchasing one myself! i'm really liking the Epson TW100 but that's going for about $3500 right now and it doesn't offer HDCP...but i'm hoping that in the next 6 months they'll release an updated version.
