? 5.1 source on a 7.1 channel speakers

I have never heard this before. How does a 5.1 digital source sound on a 7.1 channel speakers. I am assuming that the middle speakers are the same sound that comes out of the rear. Does the sound roll back like that or is it a waste of money right now?

I am not sure but I believe that if there is no signal for that channel there will be no sound from that speaker.

My receiver (Denon 3803) allows the option of a couple different settings, one which leaves the center speakers inactive on 5.1 sources and another which duplicates the audio from the side speakers into the center speakers.

Keep in mind also that there are a number of Dolby Digital 5.1 mixes that, although not officially EX-encoded, decode well into 6.1 with sounds matrixing into the center channel. Lilo & Stitch is a recent example.
