Any way to convert LaserDisc to VCD?

I was just curious about if you could convert a LaserDisc to VCD (or some other form of backup)???? I would like to do this before Laser Rot sets in on some of my Discs that are still not on DVD yet....not sure if i'm violating any forum rules by asking this....if so, i will delete.

Thanks!
John

i'd recommend converting to dvd since vcd is rather poor. svcd is a viable option if you don't have a dvd burner.
www.dvdrhelp.com has indepth info
basically you need to hook your ld player to a capture card and run the sound to your sound card and record the two then convert it to what ever format you're storing it as.

I agree with Duz...don't fool around with VCD. I have 1000's of laserdiscs and have transferred quite a few of them to DVD using a $400 Panasonic recorder (model E30) and Ritek blanks (available for less than a buck). The quality is quite nice using a S cable.

I tried the PC route and eventually gave up; far too time consuming and the results I got were marginal. After doing a little reading here and at avsforum, I got a Pioneer DVR-7000. The results are excellent (as good as the original as far as I can see) and with any set top recorder, it's a very simple process.
