JVC players - compatibility problems?
Note to mods: I didn't quite know where to put this post so if you feel it should go elsewhere, please move it. Thanks.
I was wondering if JVC owners are experiencing problems with certain dvds that just won't play on their machines. That is - the player plays 95% of your discs fine, but for some reason freezes/pauses when playing the other 5%. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

I have had no problems with my JVC, but I only play my non-R1 discs in it, so the majority of my collection has not gone through it.
There is a thread in the DVD Talk forum about Metropolis (R1) not working in JVCs properly.

I will probably try my copy in it tonight and see if I notice any problems.
I do know that the one DVD I had a ton of problems with, His and Her Circumstance vol 1 (anime), wouldn't work at all in my Samsung or on my computer dvd-rom drive. But worked perfectly in my JVC 602.
But the player has played everything I have thrown at it perfectly, so I have no complaints yet.

The only disc that I have momentary freezes on is The Matrix R1. I have the multi-region JVC-S500. No probs on anything else. Although, I've bvegun to notice that PAL discs seem a little darker than they should be.

I haven't had any problems playing any disc R1 or R2. I have the XV-S65, I'm looking to acquire a few more troublesome discs like the special edition of Vidoq, so I'll see what happens with that.

The Extras disc of the 2-disc "Star Trek IV" set acted strangely last night on my JVC XVSA-70 multi-regional player. Only the "Time Travel" extra would play. I could not access the menu at all & it would not appear when starting the disc in the player from a turned off beginning. Plus after the "Time Travel" extra finished playing the player when to 00:00:00 & a black screen & did nothing else. It just sat there & none of the remote's controls would work except OFF. Any thoughts?

The reason I posted is because I am having problems with my Mallrats DVD (which plays fine on my dvd-rom). So am wondering if the player is faulty or finicky...

Dragonslayer - if you have access to another dvd player, try it there and see what happens...
fnordboy - what you have heard may have come from me - I seem to be the only person having that problem with Mallrats and my JVC 602....

</small>If you are talking R1 DVDs only then this most likely is one for the Hardware Forum. I'll move it across sometime if you clarify that is the case.

I had a similar problem to what DRAGONSLAYER related on an extra disc (I forget which one) but it seemed to think it was an audio disk and just showed the timer incrementing....
On the other hand, my Star Trek IV extra disk played just fine...I have hundreds of DVD's, and this was the only problem.

It seemed that a good majority of my compatibility problems were with discs from Criterion and Anchor Bay.....which really sucked because those are probably the two companies I buy the most stuff from. My advice is to get a new player and never buy JVC again.

Add subtitles in Phenomenon... not a major one though - Portuguese is used at one point in the film and the subtitles come on, but they don't turn off when the Portuguese is over - it has to be switched back off.
