My fiance's stepfather just bought an Onkyo 7.1 surround sound receiver, but I don't think there are any DVD's out there that can take advantage of the 7.1. Are there any or is there anything out there that can test the 7.1? Like a test DVD or something?

Any DD-EX or DTS-ES soundtrack.

The only DTS-ES I can think of right now is LOTR:FOTR. Someone else will probably be along shortly with more suggestions.

Sound&Vision Home Theater Tune-Up can test the 6.1 and 7.1 setups. It's available for ~$15. I've never used the higher end AVIA or Video Essentials so I don't know if they have 6.1/7.1 tests.

I seem to remember THX Optimizer on some of the later releases have a center surround included in the audio tests. Can anyone else confirm this?

The same information is sent to the 6th and 7th channels (Center Surround), just that a 7.1 setup creates a more diffused sound.

Neither Avia nor Video Essentials have 6.1 speaker tests. Only the Sound & Vision disc has this.

Both Avia and Video Essentials have more comprehensive video test patterns, though.

Keep in mind, there are no 7.1 sources, only 6.1. 7.1 systems simply spread the rear center channel to two speakers.
