Using PS2 with component connection
I currently use my PS2(hooked up to my 27" Panasonic PanaBlack) to watch my DVDs. It looks pretty sharp from what I can tell. But if I buy a standalone player with components will it really be that much of a difference. I had previously hooked up a no-name player(my parents old one) with s-video and it was far worse quality than the PS2. So should I bother getting a standalone or stick with my PS2?

There won't be a HUGE difference with your display size, perhaps a touch better depending on what type of player you buy, but get a standalone.... Less wear and tear on your PS2. Personally, I prefer to use my PS2 for games and nothing else.
One man's opinion... Others will tell you differently.
HOWEVER, is your PS2 hooked up via component inputs at the moment (a little confusing from your post)? If not, yes, you would notice a difference, on your movies AND your games, by going component if your set allows... The alternative of course is just buying the PS2 component cables... In fact, if you have component ins on your tele you SHOULD be using them for your PS2... There IS a big difference there between the composite and component cables.
