please help me understand surround sound

Ok, I know these are probably easy questions for most of you, but I am a bit confused. Sorry this is so long and involved...

I have a dvd player with a DTS encoder and a digital output along with a two-RCA-cable output. My reciever (Kenwood 500 W) does not have the digital input jack, but gives you the option to input the six separate rca channels(FR, FL, RR, RL, C, SW), which I can't do coming out of my dvd player. So I've had it hooked up with just the right and left RCA channels.

Here's my question: to get the best sound, should I get a new reciever with the digital input jack, or a new dvd player that has the six separate outputs? And if I go the second route will that allow me to hear the dts tracks, or is that possible with the digital cord only?

thanks for the help

A new receiver will probably sound better than a new dvd player. Getting a new receiver will also allow you to add other digital components (satellite, more than 1 dvd player, etc.) in the future. Of course, receivers typically cost more than dvd players.

Some dvd players are capable of decoding and passing dts through their 6-channel outputs. I don't know which ones will, or if they are in the majority of players with on-board decoders. They definitely didn't used to be, and if I had to guess, I'd say that's still true.

If you have six analog outputs, your DVD has to do the decoding and you have to be sure it has the features/modes you need.

If you use DVD's digital output (either coax or optical) your receiver does the decoding and you have to be sure it has the features you need.

You'd like all the features in one place to avoid a lot of extra cables and possible problems or nuisance in switching modes.

In the meantime, can you just use L/R outputs and expand into ProLogic in the receiver? Not optimum, but better than plain old stereo.
