It plays on this...but wont play on that!
im starting to lose it. im thinking about putting a halt on my dvd buying, after almost 800 titles. why? im starting to worry that all my dvd's will just stop playing. is it a nightmare i just had? i can only hope. the reason for the panic attack is im starting to discover more and more problems with playing my dvd's without it freezing on and off and showing greenish splotches during playback. ive researched dvd-rot, mainly to do with defective pressings. these should be few however. is it increasing, or maybe its just my player? ive noticed that a disc that has problems on my player will play fine on my pc's dvd-rom. now, my sony player is almost 4 years old. i clean it on a very regular basis, but this does not seem to help. is it possible that my player is just wearing out? maybe my lenz has grown faulty or just got damaged? maybe ive answered my own question and just need to buy a new player, but id like to hear your thoughts. i dont want to spend the $ on dvds like i have been until i solve this problem. it kills me to have to say that because films are a big part of my life....and dvd is THEE format right now. so after all this babbeling on, i guess my question is, why will a select dvd play on my dvd-rom, but have problems on my home theatre player? thanks.

i have a follow-up question or two. we are all use to the slight pause during a layer change, right? why is there no pause when played on my x-box or dvd-rom? why only on the home player? AND, if there is a manufacturing problem like air bubbles trapped between layers or a glue problem or whatever, wouldnt that disc be problematic on the x-box and dvd-rom as well? im confused.

If a disc plays on 1 player and not another, then it's usually going to be a player problem. If the disc was totally whacked, it shouldn't play anywhere.
It could be that your player is dirty (but you say you clean it, so probably not,) or that the tracking is going out on it. It could have some other malfunction too. If you've got a friend who's got the same model of player it wouldn't hurt to try the disc out on that one to see what happens.
