TV surround

I recently purchased a new TV and a surround sound system. My receiver is 6.1 Ex, ES, so I know it can be hooked up to my TV. My question is, what kind of cable do I need to buy to get surround sound off of TV programs? My TV has two audio outputs on the back of it.

Actually, you should hook everything into your receiver, and run a video cable from the receiver's "Monitor Out" to your TV.

No you shouldn't run the video through your receiver. It'll degrade the signal (how noticeably will be up to the receiver), but everytime you have the signal going through something else instead of straight to the tv, you are going to get signal loss. If you can avoid it, don't pass the video signal through your receiver.

Right...

Anyway, my receiver has video signal filter which makes the signal look better. You will not notice any signal loss if you connect everything through the reciever and then run a Monitor Out to the TV (assuming that you would actually have signal loss). This is the optimal way to run it (in my opinion). The same logic (if there is any here) can be said about the audio. Because you are running more cable to get it to the TV then to the receiver instead of straight to the receiver, you get signal loss.

Trust me. Run everything to your reciever and send a video out (s-video or component is availible) to your TV.
