Advise Needed

My wife bought a 36" FD TrinitronŽ WEGAŽ XBRŽ Hi-ScanŽ TV KV-36XBR800, as a gift for me.

I must admit that I know next to nothing about good TV's or good quality sound set-up.

I'm turning to you all for help.

1. Is this a good TV? (I mean I know the picture quailty is good)
2. I have $1,500 to spend on a Receiver and Speakers. Can you recommend ones for me to listen to or to get?

The set-up I was thinking of was 2 front floor speakers, a center, 2 rear and a sub-woofer. I think this is the 5.1 set-up.

I want to sit down and enjoy watching and listing to all the DVD movies I'm starting to get.

I 2 DVD players I have are RCA RC5240P and the Philips DVD 870P.
I'm going to use one with the set-up everyone helps me built and the other in the bedroom.

Thank-You for any advise you can offer.

Tony

Don't have anything specific, but I would spend at least $500 of that on the receiver, rest on speakers. STAY AWAY from boxed systems that have receiver/speakers, etc. in one package. Typically overpriced and lower quality that what you can piece togethor.

I'd also stay with audio grade companies on the receiver (Denon, Onkyo, Yamaha, Outlaw, etc.) and stay away from mass market (Sony, Kenwood, HK) unless you get their top of the line stuff (they have so many models it's easy to get confused).

If you plan to listen to a lot of music as well as movies on this system, I preferred Denon over Onkyo, and I also believe Yammy does well on music too. Bring a CD you like with you when you test out models.

Tony, I'm in a similar situation. I'm looking to get something for around $1000, including receiver and speakers. I'll be watching this thread closely.

Yes the Sony is an excellent TV.

I would go out and listen to some speakers at various stores. Be patient and trust your ears. I would purchase a receiver after the speakers.

Some good brands with a variety of prices and sizes are B&W, Paradigm, PSB, Energy.

Here are some links that may help:

Good luck!
