Which reciever should i get ?
Hi guys,
You have helped me in the past to make up my mind so i'm back to ask some more questions. Well i've decided i want to upgrade to 6.1. First off is it worth the $$$ to buy a new reciever ? ok i think i have it narrowed down to 2 recievers Denon 2802 and Sony STR-DA5es anything good or bad about these ? Speakers are Procinema Definitive Technology, if that helps. I have a question about Dolby EX, is it discrete or matrixed ? The Sony has Dolby EX but the Denon doesn't. It has Dolby 6.1 Matrixed. Is this the same thing ? If it isn't the same thing is it a big diffrence ? I really wanted this so i could watch LOTR and the Star Wars movies in Dolby EX. Also i have a question about placement of the sixth speaker (rear surround) right now my seating position is against the back wall. Should the speaker be pointed directly down at me or should i experiment to find what works best ? thanks for the help |
Have you considered the Denon 3802 instead of the 2802....the 3802 to is more apples to apples with the SONY that you're looking at.
Overall, I'm a big Denon fan (I have the 4800) and not much of a SONY receiver fan. The Denon to me was much smoother, better handling of the range of sounds and volumes and much fuller in sound. I believe that the 3802 has 6.1 discrete and also has ProLogic II if that benefits you at all. |

I believe that the 3802 has 6.1 discrete and also has ProLogic II if that benefits you at all. Is Dolby EX discrete or matrixed ? I don't think any of the Denon's X802's support Dolby Ex, Even the THX models. Is it worth to buy another reciever that supports Dolby Ex ? Which receiver do you have now? What is your price range? |
Your Sony DE-835 retailed for $499, I think. I don't think it is worth it for you to upgrade unless you can go to higher price point.
Receivers like the Denon 3802 or the Onkyo SR-700 (I'm not a big sony receiver fan) should be a big improvement. But they retail for $800-1000 (Online Prices $600-750). Receivers like the Denon 2802, Onkyo SR-600, or Outlaw Audio 1050. (Retail prices $500-800 Online Prices $400-500) They are nice receivers, but I don't think the improvement would be large enough to warrant the cost of the upgrade. (The Denon 2802 is a possible exception.) Just my .02 |
Dolby Ex is a matrixed rear channel.
DTS-ES is discrete info to suround back. Considered Onkyo yet? |
