Suggestions for a player w/o layer change
I need suggestions for a new DVD player that has no or minimal layer change. I would like it to play as many types of discs as possible including DVD-r and Video CD, etc. It doesn't have to be progressive or even have component video. Price range is under $500. Thanks.

Maybe I'm speaking out of turn, but I don't understand the big deal with a 1/2 second pause that occurs no more than once per movie. Sure beats getting up to flip the thing over. Make a game out of it called "spot the layer change".

Most layer changes are fine but I think my big gripe with layer changes is in Ghostbusters on my player. Most of you problably don't notice it, but on my Philips dvd711, it always cuts off a line.
I get "What about the Tw...." instead of "What about the Twinkie?" Of course every other player you put it in doesn't cut the line off in this fashion but I've always sworn that my next player wouldn't have a layer change.

I'm in the same boat now. My old Sony 530 is acting up on me, and I'd like to buy a new player... it doesn't need to be progressive scan necessarily, but I'd like something that has no/minimal layer change and can read CD-Rs. Any suggestions?

I've gone through about 5-6 players and they all have the layer change freeze (even my $800 Sony NS900V). The only one that didn't have any pause at all was the ProScan DIVX model I snagged from Circuit City after DIVX bit it. I think the model # was 6980z or something like that. Perhaps proscan's current models work as well in this department.
