Does bending an optical toslink cable 'hurt' it?

Does bending an optical toslink cable 'hurt' it?
I read somewhere that you shouldn't bend optical digital cables for fear of 'breaking' them. Is this true?

You can let it bend gently and naturally around a corner w/ no probs usually. If you force around a corner and kink it, you run a good chance of breaking it. It's not like copper wiring that you can bend any which way, it's optical so it doesn't take much to break it.

I tied mine is 3 tight knots for a test and it works perfectly. It's not glass so it's not as easy to break.
At work I rolled something over some fibre optic cable smashing it completly flat and it still works perfectly.

Well, it was kind of long. So originally I looped it together and tied it with a tiewrap (pretty tight). I don't think I should do that. So I untied it and just let it hang now.
