Will this speaker damage affect their performance?

I finally received the Monitor Audio Silver 5is I won in an auction on Ebay yesteday. (I also won some 9is, but those arrived last week.)

Unfortunately, there appears to be some damage to the tweeters.

It's the top cone. In the picture it looks silver, but that's actually a wire mesh over the tweeter and it looks like a miniature version of the two gold mid range drivers below it.

I think what happenned is the little wire mesh popped off during shipping (it's held in place by magnetic force) and created two little dimples on the tweeter. This happenned on both speakers.

I have 9is that have the same tweeter (1" C-CAM (Coated Ceramic Aluminum Magnesium) gold dome tweeter) and they don't have these dimples, nor does my Silver Center 10, so I'm pretty sure they aren't supposed to be there.

I haven't hooked them up yet, but does anyone think this could affect the sound?

I can post a picture later on tonight if it would make a difference.

Thanks for any help.

Yeap

It might be very very small but it will effect them. Wont hurt to play them until (or if) you replace them.

Call customer service about new ones.

Well, I've heard that you can get replacements from Monitor Audio (I've seen just the drivers on ebay for this very reason), so that is an option.

There was insurance on the shipping. Do you think I should make a claim (I think the seller would have to do this), or would I be better off just trying to get new parts from Monitor Audio?

Item description said "The pair I am selling is in excellent shape and are black. The only reason I am selling them is they were replaced by the silver 9's." Is this worth taking up with the seller?

I guess I should have told him to use UPS instead of Priority Mail but it was an $84 difference in shipping costs.

I'd sure go the insurance route. And he should handle it since it was either his problem in that it was damaged originally, or his bad packing job, or shipping damage. Leaving it up to him to handle puts the burden on him to show that it wasn't his fault and you don't have to get between him and the insurance process.

Any indications on the packing of what might have happened to jar it that much?

skar,

I believe bfrank is referring to the speaker manufacturer's customer service. Give them a call and they may even have a fix that does not require replacement.

Well, I didn't really want to get into it as I'm a little upset about that.

He didn't have the original boxes, so he put them in the boxes for the 9is he just bought. These are somewhat bigger than the 5is, so he couldn't use the packing material for the 9is. And instead he used PEANUTS!!

Took me a half hour just to unpack them and then clean up all that crap!

He did put plastic bags over the speakers, but they weren't big enough to cover the whole thing.

However...it's not really obvious that the little mesh screen comes off. One of the screens on my 9is came off (shipped via UPS) only it didn't do any damage to the cone. It's held in place by magnetism and these seem weaker than on the 9is so a few good bumps could do it.

I'll try emailing the seller and Monitor Audio and see what they have to say.

Thanks all.

MA will sell you new tweeters. The actual manufacturing cost for a driver like this is about $10 but you can expect to pay at least 4 times that

I think I would email the seller about it. Then get the cost from MA for replacments then try to deal to split the cost with the seller.

Sorry.
