Why can I only hear DVD in 5.1

I have a Yamaha RX-V2090 Its the best reciever that I have ever owned the only problem is that I can not change the sound field's when Im watching a DVD.I only get audio when it is in the LD/TV Mode as soon as I select Pro logic or whatever I get no sound. Is there a problem with my reciever or is this just the way it is Please Help!!!

Sounds to me like a connection problem.

How do you have the audio connected? What kind of DVD player?

If your DVD player is only connected using a digital connection, then you need to also connect the analog R/L audio outputs to an available input on your receiver. Pro-Logic and soundfields are created using the analog signal (which is why your TV input works fine).

I don't know if this helps, but I have my DVD player connected digitally to the receiver's "DVD" input, and I also have the R/L outputs connected to the TV, and the TV connected to the receiver's "TV" input -- that way, I haven't 'wasted' any inputs.

Not true. I've only got my DVD player connected using the digital coax, and it plays CD's in Pro-logic or 2 channel sound no problem. And DVD's can be switched at will (although, why would I want to watch in pro-logic vs DD)

Is there a place to switch from digital to analog output on the DVD player? I have an APEX with both digital out and analog hooked up...I have to go to a menu and select ONE of the outputs because I cant use them at the same time.

Yeah. I have a mini system attached to my computer through an optical cable. And it can plays Prologic.

Also, you cannot mess with the sound fields in DD mode. This is by design.

And you wouldn't want to anyway.

maybe i'm dense, but why would you care about the analog connections anyway? and why would you connect any audio cables from the dvd player to the tv??

The only reason I do this is so I can view DVD material late at night, quietly if I wish. It works fine for commentary and other extras on the disc.

DD receivers have what is called "night mode" which takes out the loudness, making loud noised much quieter. I use this when watching at night too. My receiver has this, your might or might not.
