Apex Problem

I have an Apex AD-500A and I have run into a problem with sound. The problem is this: No sound. I've monkied with all of the appropriate settings (SPDIF settings, DD output, etc.) and the cords and such, but I still can't get the damned thing to output sound. It's hooked up to a tv via a mono Panasonic vcr, on an older Toshiba tv with no RCA inputs, only coaxial. The picture is working just fine, but the sound is completely mute Any suggestions?

Did it ever work in that configuration?

It appears that the player just stopped playing sound spontaneously. I put in a copy of The Sound of Music and all of the sudden, no DVD would play any sound at all. I reset the factory defaults, because the player worked just fine out of the box, but even after resetting defaults, it doesn't work. So that configuration was fine, I didn't really tool around with the configuration much until now, but I have tried many combinations. I just wanted to see if there was something that I hadn't tried, or didn't know about.

The Apex players are legendary for poor quality. I have even seen articles about this on Yahoo news.

I have an Apex...I use it sparingly, and carefully

Think of an Apex as a cheap disposable player. The picture went out on mine after a year, first RCA, then the S-video.

I have an Apex 500W. It worked fine for a few months and then just about every disc, except Shrek, skipped!

Apex made a ton of these players for Wal Mart. Apparently they did absolutely no quality control.

Hmmm, I have the 500a and have used it for about a year and a half now without any problems. Well, one problem with Wizard of oz, but I fixed it.

It's true though, you can't be expecting much for 90 bucks! hehe.

I picked up the 1100w model for 63 bucks. Got it as a 3rd player for an upstairs bedroom, plus for the nice vcd support. It has been playing fine. Quality is lacking however. The flip down tray cover broke off about the 2nd day I had the unit. It sits inside a hutch though so I usually dont have to look at the ugly piece of crap. It does its job. You get what you pay for.

The menu controls on the remote are crap too, you have to have the 'shift' mode on to navigate menu's. Seems like they could have found away around that.
